Benny Geys studierte Volkswirtschaftlehre an der Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Leicester University und der Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Er ist seit Oktober 2005 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Abteilung Marktprozesse und Steuerung. Seine Forschungsinteressen liegen in Public Choice, Politische Ökonomie und Sozialökonomie. Er interessiert sich besonders für (lokale) Steuernpolitik und die Determinanten von Regierungspopularität und Bürgerpartizipation.

Seit dem 1. August 2009 ist er Mitarbeiter im Forschungsprojekt "The Future of Fiscal Federalism" am WZB.
