  Ecology Yearbook 2008

The 2008 edition of the Ecology Yearbook (Jahrbuch Ökologie) is on sale from September 17, 2007. From its very beginnings in 1991, the yearbook has been compiled and shaped in cooperation with the most important environment institutes in the German-speaking countries. The editorial work was again undertaken by Professor em. Udo E. Simonis of the Science Center Berlin (WZB).
Based on a broad understanding of the term “ecology”, rooted in everyday experience and comprising the relationship of men and nature, of society and environment, the Yearbook aims at
·          presenting solid information on the state of the ecology and the development of threats to our natural
        environment,
·          contributing to a critical discussion on national and international environmental policy,
·          demonstrating sustainable development alternatives in co-evolution with nature.
The structure of the book comprises a controversial debate of experts on a topical issue of environmental policy, the documentation of relevant ecological initiatives, and the presentation of considerate dealings and successful co-evolution with nature in everyday life.
The 2008 edition of the yearbook focusses on: "Impacts of Climate Change", "Bionics",  "Eco-Lifestyles", and "Strategic Environmental Impact Assessments".
Other major articles include a discussion on the resource and the growth question, the accident in Forsmark atomic plant, and the debate on excellence of German universities.
All in all 50 authors contributed to the yearbook.

  Festschrift for Udo E. Simonis
Trends and impacts of global change give reason to worry. The efforts of thinking economy and ecology together, of co-evolution, have to be reconsidered, taking into account cultural identities and the preservation of peace. All these factors have to be integrated into the broader context of a sustainable culture for all mankind. In the contributions gathered in this volume the authors are taking stock of recent developments and point out possible perspectives.

The book was composed to honour Udo E. Simonis on his 65th birthday. During the last decades he has distinguished himself as an ecological economist, time and again contributing to the discussion on how to guide the driving forces of global change and to better balance world economy and world ecology.

  >The Rousseau question - ecologically revisited
250 years ago Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote on science, arts, and public morals, an essay that made him world-famous. The original question of the Academy of Dijon has now been put in an ecological context: "Did progress in science and the arts contribute to the protection and conservation of our environment?" The best and most interesting essays in answer to this question were chosen for publication in a book that reflects a most complex and differentiated picture: The destructive power of parts of the natural sciences coincides with constructive contributions of other parts; the social sciences are being reproached for their lack of interest in ecological questions; the arts are seen as possessing a high potential for the protection of nature which, however, has yet to be turned into action.

Sustainable development is considered an idea which may contribute to an integration of the sciences, thus directing their efforts towards a positive solution of the problem addressed by the prize question.

  Praise and Prize
„Did progress in arts and sciences contribute to the protection and preservation of the environment?“ A prize of 10 000 Deutschmarks was offered for essays in answer to this question. The result of the competition surprised even the jury: The intellectual elite of ecological thought in Germany was found to reside not at the universities or research institutes but rather at the highest federal agencies for the protection of nature and the environment, namely the Federal Nature Protection Agency (Bundesamt für Naturschutz - BfN) and the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt - UBA).

Reinhard Piechocki’s (BfN) answer to the question (WZB-paper FSII-02-401 "Altäre des Fortschritts und Aufklärung im 21. Jahrhundert",> download as PDF, 145 KB) is a rather strict no. He therefore suggests three changes in perspective as a remedy: “mid-world” instead of “environment“, “economy without continuous growth”, and “aesthetics of sustainability”! Charlotte and Michael Wehrspaun (UBA) discovered a new paradox of progress: Sustainability has, in their view, remained a well-meaning concept without the necessary appeal to people’s senses and imagination (WZB-Paper FSII- 02-402 "Von der Paradoxie des Fortschritts zum unvermittelten Leitbild",> download as PDF, 116.7 KB). The prizes were presented at the Science Center Berlin (WZB) on 19th November, 2001.
